Text Box:     How to Practice Zazen
Come in comfortable clothes.
Doors open for arrivals approximately 15 minutes prior to the starting time. Please do not ring the bell or telephone once Zazen started.
Remove shoes and socks before entering practice area.
Bow upon entering and proceed to the practice hall (Hondo) quietly and with respect. Once entered, bow toward the front wall.
Find a zafu and zabuton (sitting cushions) or a chair, bow toward them and sit quietly either in cross-legs or Japanese-style seiza (knee-fold position). For sitting detail, the dharma leader will guide you at the practice hall.
Begin meditating while waiting for the Dharma Leader to start the Zazen Kai.
Throughout meditation, sit quietly without moving. Once practice starts, there is no leaving and no re-entering except for emergencies.
On Sunday Zazen Kai, Dharma Talks take place right after Zen meditation. Following the Dharma Talk, please participate in Soji, or cleaning for purification. Soji reflects gratitude and respect for the dojo and our practice.
Traditional Japanese Samue (zen practice clothes) are the preferred attire to attend zazen. Samue are available for purchase at the ZenshoAn USA office.
ZenshoAn USA is supported by your participation and donations. A contribution is requested. Those who are interested in attending regularly, it is encouraged to become members. Please visit the ZenshoAn USA office for membership benefits and registration.
